Finished this a few weeks ago, finally getting around to posting about it. Pattern is from the Snarky Cross-Stitch kit from a friend. You'll probably see more of these in the future 😏

Made something incredibly fun a few months ago and I'm finally posting about it. Thanks to a heads up from @kenziedeart about the pattern hack by @keikolynn, I managed to sew this great hat together pretty quickly!

Bee fabric from @spoonflower in cotton canvas with a print designed by @natty_designs, and the black canvas is from @moodfabrics. Base pattern is the Floppy Bucket hat from The Sew Club on Etsy. I'm usually not much of a hat person (curly hair and hats just don't go together?), but I'm digging the whole secret witch hat thing, plus the bee print which had to be done since I'm a beekeeper!

Just wrapped up turning the hand quilting project from the class with Elise at @seamlesssewingarts into a pillow cover! She had the same design finished into a pillow cover, and that seemed like the easiest way to use the panel in a finished object. I grabbed an existing pillow, did some measuring and sewing math, and a few nice, easy straight lines later, voila! Bonus, no zipper sewing (even though I actually love sewing zippers), and it was a super quick and easy way to use up scrap from a dress!

Another quick project made from fabric leftover from a dress. Usually I can knock out a t-shirt and a dress from 3 yards of @spoonflower cotton spandex knit since it's a pretty wide fabric. Anyway, secret nerd content which you might not see unless you know (and then you know). This has become one of my favorite t-shirt patterns - it fits really well and it's pretty flattering with the little ruched detail. I'd tag the fabric print designer, but I couldn't find them on IG.

Pattern is the Knit Sweetheart Top from the book Gertie Sews Vintage Casual. I don't even remember all the modifications I've done at this point, but IIRC, I graded between 3 sizes because hips, and used a t-shirt I already had to gauge how wide/long I wanted the shirt. Also added a bit of width to the sleeves.

Started reading this book the other night. The publishing date is 1914 and my great grandma's name is written on the inside. She would've been 14 when this was published, so it's possible she read it as a teenager. It's, uh, definitely a book of its time, with some words used to describe people that aren't at all acceptable. The story is about a young woman from a small town who is coerced by her family to go to NYC and become a show girl (vaudeville type acts), and eventually marry a rich man. All of this was to support her family since no one else had earning potential and she was their ticket to making money. Anyway, the family goes to NYC, the girl catches on to their using her as a cash cow, and I'm only halfway through, but .. whew. It's a ride. Figuring out some of the colloquialisms that we just don't use anymore has probably done a number on my Google search history, I'm sure.

The book was made into a silent film in 1917 and later into a comedy in 1926 that doesn't much resemble the book. There's a stack of similar books from this time period that we found when Grandma passed away, and I've always wanted to read them out of curiosity (knowing there would undoubtedly be lots of cringe because of when they were written). The books great grandma read are part of the story of her life beyond vital statistics and photos, and it's interesting to see what she was reading in her spare time!

My little adventure in faux Kintsugi!

This plate came as one of a set of four as part of a Kickstarter for @calamityware - I'm a HUGE fan of their designs and tableware with various calamities befalling what looks like an otherwise traditional blue willow ceramic piece. Unfortunately, after having had the best luck over multiple packages from Calamityware, this one plate arrived broken. The company already replaced it (absolutely top notch customer service), but I couldn't bear to toss the broken pieces. Enter Kintsugi.

The Kintsugi kit I got uses a two part epoxy instead of the traditional lacquer, but, the traditional method uses a lacquer called Urushi that's a close cousin to the oil in poison ivy that causes irritation. (I've got a pretty bad allergy to poison ivy, so that wasn't going to fly.) Epoxy it is then!

The process was pretty simple - mix the two part epoxy with a gold mica powder and apply to the sanded edges, then press in place for about 5 minutes. Steady hands and lots of patience really helped here. My first seam isn't that great, but I picked it up after the first lessons-learned, and the last two pieces came together much cleaner.

While the epoxy says it's a "bio epoxy" and safe for food, I really doubt that since epoxies just aren't food safe, but there are lots of great uses for a plate! In the end, I saved something from the trash and turned it into a treasure, and that's pretty great.
